Through
Volunteer Service
The GFWC Junior Woman’s
Club of Springfield (est. 1952) is a non-profit group of diverse women
whose primary goal is to work together to raise money to support a
number of charitable endeavors both locally and abroad.
Like everyone these days, our club members lead very busy lives, but we
all agree that it’s important to set aside time to have fun, meet new
friends, and make a difference in our community.
JWCS
sponsors several fun-filled events each year, such as our “Make It,
Bake It, Sew It, Grow It” talent auction, Shop ‘Till you drop
(featuring local home-based businesses and crafters), 5th
& 6th grade dances, Halloween Parade on Saxer,
Easter Egg Hunt, and gift wrapping at Borders Books & Music.
Our club also honors outstanding local high school seniors from both
Springfield High School and Cardinal
O’Hara High School twice a year and sponsors the Doris Monaghan Allied
Health Scholarship, which is awarded to a local high school senior
pursuing a college career in a science-related career.
Aside from fundraising, our club members also enjoy getting together
for our monthly business meetings, crafts, fun day/weekend trips, and
Saturday night out activities.
We also have a great May Dessert Meeting at a local restaurant with
lots of treats, and our club year concludes with an end of the year
banquet to celebrate the amazing accomplishments throughout the year.
With each new president’s administration, our club selects a charitable
organization to benefit from the majority of the club’s fundraising
efforts throughout the two-year administration. Karen Mills, our
current president has chosen Mommy's Light as her charity
during the 2006-2008 term.
President’s message:
Our club meets the third Tuesday from September thru June. It is a
wonderful way to meet and make new friendships. During the meetings
there is time to socialize and then discuss upcoming projects that our
club will sponsor to benefit our community. My charity is Mommy's
Light. They are committed to bringing joy and comfort to
maternally bereaved children and teens by helping them keep alive
traditions or simple pleasures they shared with their mothers. Please
log onto www.mommyslight.org to
learn more about this wonderful organization. Thank you for taking the
time to view our web site and please call our membership spokes person,
Beth, for any further questions. Karen Mills
