LEAF BURNING PROHIBITED
Leaf burning is prohibited in Springfield. Please
rake your leaves to a position inside the sidewalk. Do
not rake the leaves past the sidewalk
to the curb where they will clog
the gutters and storm drains.
Leaves can be raked as illustrated or composted in
your back yard. The schedule for leaf collection will be published in
the Springfield Press and
shown on Springfield’s Cable TV Channel.
After the scheduled collection period has passed,
leaves may be bagged and put out on your regular trash days.
Due to the Christmas Holiday on
Tuesday, December 25th, 2007 and the New Years Day Holiday on Tuesday,
January 1, 2008 trash and paper recycling will not be collected. Trash that is normally collected on Tuesdays
and Fridays will only be collected on Friday, December 28th and Friday,
January 4th of those two weeks.
Paper recycling will not be collected on Tuesday, December 25th 2007 or
Tuesday, January 1st, 2007 residents are asked to hold their papers
until the following days, Wednesday, December 26th and again on
Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008.
The collection of commingled recycling for Tuesday, December 25th, 2007
will be picked up along with Wednesdays collection, December 26th and
the same for Tuesday, January 1st, 2008 will be picked up on Wednesday,
January 2nd, 2008.

Bring your cell phones to the township building for recycling. there
will be a bin in the township building lobby.
The
phone swill be taken to the county and disposed in an environmentally
responsible manner.

TRASH REMINDERS
54-3. Pre-Collection Practices Preparation of Refuse –
- All garbage, before being placed in containers for collection,
shall have drained from it all free liquids and should be wrapped in
paper. All refuse shall be drained of liquid before being deposited
for collection.
- Tree trimmings, hedge clippings and similar materials shall be
cut to length not to exceed three (3) feet and securely tied in
bundles not
more than two (2) feet thick before being placed for
collection. Tree trimmings, branches, and similar materials should
not be placed in
trash containers.
- Ash must not be put in paper bags or cardboard cartons.
- Broken glass, syringes and other sharp objects must be disposed
of in containers which will properly hold the contents.
- Animal feces must be disposed of in water-tight plastic bags
which will properly hold the contents.
Containers –
All refuse receptacles shall have a water tight lid and be of
such type that
shall securely contain its contents and may be easily
handled by one man;
except that in multi-dwelling unit developments,
dumpster type containers
may be required by the Township.
All refuse receptacles shall be maintained in good condition,
must not have
ragged or sharp edges. Failure to comply with this
provision will result in the
refusal to collect the refuse.
Refuse must be placed in containers of metal or of substantial
plastic
construction. Plastic disposal bags will be accepted.
Containers together with
contents shall not exceed forty (40) pounds
in weight and shall be placed
inside and adjoining the curb line in
such manner as not to obstruct passage
on the sidewalk.
In areas of the Township where plastic bags are used and have
been subject to animal depredation, the Health Officer may direct
the use of containers
of metal or substantial plastic construction,
with tight lids, to terminate the
animal activities.
Householders shall not place refuse containers, bags of leaves,
bulk items,
appliances, shrubbery of grass clippings inside and
adjoining the curb line
prior to sundown of the day before
collection.
Householders must remove emptied containers from the street side
of the
premises within twelve (12) hours after the containers have
been emptied.
Continuous maintenance of refuse containers on the
side of the dwelling unit
shall constitute a violation of the
Township Code. Refuse containers must be stored to the rear of the
building line.
Any unauthorized accumulation of refuse, garbage, rubbish, bulk
waste or recyclables on any residential or non-residential premises
is hereby deemed to be a nuisance and is hereby prohibited.
It shall be unlawful for any person other than the occupants of
the premises upon which the refuse containers are maintained or
employees of the Township to remove covers, containers, or contents
or refuse containers placed for collection.
BULK PICK UP PROCEDURES
To schedule a bulk pick up you have to come
to the Township Building
located at 50 Powell Road or the Public Works
Department located at 1258 Church Road to pre-pay and pre-schedule for a
pick-up. The fees are $30.00 for a standard pick-up truck,
$40.00 for a dump truck and $20.00 for each
appliance added in. Bulk pick ups are only done on Wednesdays
and the cut off time is the Tuesday before by 12:00P.M.

RECYCLING
Springfield Township is a leader in recycling in Pennsylvania. This can
be attributed to the conscientious effort of many of the residents of
Springfield. Every week, mixed papers and commingled materials
(including glass, steel, aluminum, plastic#1&2) are picked up at
curbside. The containers that hold the recyclables are available, free
of charge, at the Township or Public Works Buildings.
COLLECTIONS
Recyclables will be picked up once per week on your recycling
day.
Recyclables should be put out to the curb the evening before your
collection day or before 7:00a.m.
RECYCLABLE MATERIAL TO BE COLLECTED
Newspapers, magazines, periodicals, phone books, junk
mail, cardboard, etc. will be picked up on your recycling day by the Public Works Department.
In the event of a
holiday, hold your paper until your next regularly scheduled day, except
for Christmas and New Year's Day. The paper will be picked up
the next
day after those two holidays. All paper should be placed in
the
reusable yellow bins supplied by the Township. As an alternative, paper
may be secured or tied in bundles strong enough to facilitate handling
or
may be placed in brown paper bags.NO PLASTIC BAGS OR STRING ALLOWED.
METAL CANS
Steel/tin food cans, aluminum cans and bi-metal beverage
cans will be collected by Waste Management. Bi-metal cans are
containers made of aluminum and steel. Food cans need to be rinsed.
GLASS
(All colors mixed together) Beverage bottles, food jars
and baby food jars will be collected by Waste Management. Bottles and
jars need to be rinsed and lids removed. Rings and labels may be left
on.
PLASTICS
Plastic bottles and containers with codes 1,-7 only on
the bottom will be collected. Plastic bottles and containers need to be de-capped, rinsed, and
flattened.
NO PLASTIC BAGS OR PLASTIC TOYS WILL BE COLLECTED.
NO NEED TO SEPARATE
Glass and metal cans and plastics should be commingled
(mixed together) in one container. There is no need to separate the different material or glass
by color. The recyclables shall be
contained in the reusable plastic bucket, supplied by the Township. Do
not use boxes, plastic bags, or drums for recyclable containers. Remember you can mix your glass, aluminum, metal
cans and plastics.

USED MOTOR OIL
Can be taken to the Public Works Department, Monday
through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please check with the Public Works office as to where
to leave the oil. No antifreeze or other
chemicals will be accepted. Remember it is against the law to landfill
motor oil. Used motor oil should be placed in a clean, closed plastic
container for delivery. No glass containers. Many service stations will accept used motor oil.
